Plaque marking site of Ste. Anne de Detroit
Description:
View of bronze tablet marking the site of Sainte Anne de Detroit, installed at the northwest corner of Griswold and West Jefferson. Inscription reads: "This tablet marks the site of Sainte Anne's Catholic Church, the erection of which was begun July 24th, 1701, that being the feast day of Sainte Anne. This church was the first building in Fort Pontchartrain, afterward named Detroit. The first pastor, Reverend Nicholas Constantine de l'Halle, was killed June 6th, 1706 by the Indians; the first Christian martyr in Detroit. This tablet is placed by the Catholic Study Club of Detroit, A.D. July 26th, 1928."
