Handwritten on back: "This is the first of the 1898 model Duryea cars. Begun in 1897 and first run in June 1898. It was the first regularly made car to have 3 cylinders & planetary transmission. The first regularly made to have 3 wheels and modern carburetor. All Duryea cars had central control and could be driven from either side. This model had the vertical tiller. Side way movement steered. Up gave high speed, down gave low. Heel pedal reversed, toe pedal applied brake. A twist throttle."
