View of a 1900 Cameron car. Label on back: "The Cameron car of 1900. The car illustrated herewith brought out in January 1900 was the first gasoline motor car made by Mr. F.S. Cameron. There were several remarkable things connected with this machine. To begin with, it was the first direct shaft driven automobile ever made, and the invention of Mr. Cameron. The automobile world was incredulous, nay, scoffing when he suggested such a type of drive, but the soundness of his reasoning has long since been established, as evinced the method almost universally employed in pleasure cars of today. Another advanced idea embodied here was a vertical motor with valve in the head construction, set under a hood forward of the dash. Nevertheless, for some time after this automobile engineers stuck to the accepted theory that the only place for the engine was under the body, and even now, you may see cars of this type on the road, which have been converted from pleasure into commercial vehicles. This little car, too, was equipped with a sliding gear transmission, a construction today, as we consider the trend of improvements and refinements in the construction of the automobile since its inception, the Cameron car of 1900 was far ahead of the times."
