B-17 outer wing section and wing tip meet on a split-second schedule at this final assembly on dollies traveling on a floor drag-line conveyor. Here the wing tip is fitted and minor sub-assemblies attached. From here, still on the conveyor line, the outer wing goes on to be painted and have Army Air Force insignia attached. 18,700 man-hours per month saving resulted from conveyorizing this operation, and now 135 workers perform tasks formerly requiring 215."
