Decades before tenor James Melton took up antique car collecting, other singers discovered the publicity value in being identified with automobiles. At the wheel of the 1905 White Steamer above is Augustus Post, a Metropolitan Grand Opera singer, who figured prominently in most early cross-country tours. Here, however, he's lined up for a New York City parade, starting from Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue, next door to Mark Twain's home at 21 Fifth Avenue (right background). The man in the bowler hat is an unidentified Tammany politician, while at his left is Stanton Sickles, son of General Daniel E. Sickles of Civil War fame. Augustus Post today is a pillar in the Automobile Old Timers Club. He's still a motoring enthusiast, having led a revived Glidden Tour run from Detroit to Minneapolis in the summer of 1949."
