Deed of sale for a young girl, Veronique, from Charles St. Bernard to Henry Berthelet
Transcript reads: "This indenture made at Detroit this fourth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety nine between Charles St. Bernard of Hamtramck Township, merchant, of the one part and Henry Barthelet of the town of Detroit, merchant, of the other witnesseth that the said Charles St. Bernard for, and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds New York currency, equal in value to one hundred & fifty dollars lawfull money of the United States to him in hand paid by the said Henry Barthelet at and before the sealing & delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof he, the said Charles St. Bernard doth hereby acknowledge, and thereof exonerate, acquit and discharge the said Henry Barthelet his heirs & assigns forever; hath granted, bargained & sold unto the said Henry Barthelet, his heirs & assigns a certain young Negro girl, named Veronique, of about five years of age, born within this country, when under the dominion of his Brittanick Majesty, and has never been out of it since the United States have taken possession of the same: to have & to hold the said young Negro girl above bargained & sold, for and during her natural life, unto the said Henry Barthelet his heirs & assigns, without the let, suit, trouble, molestation, or interruption of him the said Charles St. Bernard, or of any other person or persons whatever; hereby warranting the said young Negro girl, free & clear of all other sales, mortgages, claims & incumbrances whatever. In witness whereof the said parties have to these presents set their hands and affixed their seals, at Detroit aforesaid, the day, month and year first above written. Charles St. Bernard."
