This illustration shows the residence of John W. Barber on State St. in Montrose village. Mr. Barber was born in Pennysburg, Wood County, Ohio, August 15th, 1838. About one year later his parents moved into Washington township, same county, where he was reared. September 2nd, 1861, he enlisted in Co H, 21 Ohio Volunteer Infantry for three years, or during the war. While in the service he engaged in several hard fought battles, among them being the three days battle of Stone River and the two days battle of Chicamauga. At the close of the last named battle he, with the most of the survivers [sic] of his regiment, was taken prisoner and sent to the Castle Pemberton prison at Richmond, Va. After being kept there for about six weeks they were transfered to the prison at Danville, Va. The following night he and several other prisoners escaped and endeavored to make their way to the Union lines but were all retaken. As a punishment for trying to escape they were 'bucked' for five hours and returned to prison. After having been a prisoner for eight months, on the night of May 10th, 1864, he and a companion succeeded in escaping from Danville prison no. 6 and, after several weeks, traveling mostly at night and subsisting as best they could, they reached the Union lines at Fayetteville, West Virginia. September 22nd, 1864, he was discharged from the service at Atlanta, Georgia, but again enlisted in Company K, United States Veteran Volunteer Inf. at Staten Island, New York. He was discharged from the service the second time at Washington, D.C. March 25th, 1866. In the spring of 1867, he came to Clio, Genesee County, Michigan. On July 7th of the same year he was united in marriage to Harriet Francisco at Mt. Morris, Michigan. She was born in Vienna township, Genesee County, Michigan, January 19th, 1852. They have eight children, all of whom are living. In addition to the residence shown in the accompanying illustration, Mr. Barber owns a large farm on section 24 of Montrose township."
