Hotel, Montrose, Michigan
View of the first hotel in Montrose, Michigan. Printed on front: "No. 4." Label on back: "First hotel. The building here shown is the first hotel erected in the township. It is 36 feet wide 50 feet long and two stories high and contains about twenty rooms. It was erected by William H. Reed in 1866 and opened for business January 1st 1867. Less than a year after opening the hotel Mr. Reed sold it and it afterwards found its way into the hands of Thomas W. Pettee who changed it into a store and private dwelling honse [sic]. The building is located on the Saginaw and Flushing State Road, one and one-half miles south of the northern boundry [sic] of the township and stands facing the south. Mr. Pettee arranged the east end of the building for a store, the remainder being used as his residence. After continuing the store here for seventeen years he discontinued it, on account of having been elected county surveyor, and sold the building to Wm. Nicholson. It is now the property of Geo. C. McKenzie who resides in it. The location of the building is very pleasant, being in a slightly raised place on the highway over which passes a large amount of travel."
