Crowd gathered in street during aftermath of 1896 presidential campaign, Martin, Michigan
View of crowd gathered in street at Martin, Michigan in the aftermath of the presidential campaign between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. Freeman C. Ives, pictured on far left, lost a bet to his cousin Glen McLoud (sitting in wheelbarrow), when Bryan lost the election. Ives had to push his cousin through downtown Martin in a wheelbarrow. Another man sits in a wheeled cart pulled by two sheep. Several townspeople hold signs reading "Thank God, we are saved from 16 to 1," "Bryanmen can't all ride this year but will in 1900" and "Victory." Dry goods store is partially visible on right; blacksmith shop and wooden-frame buildings in background. Handwritten on front with arrow: "Freeman Ives, Glen McLoud." Handwritten on back: "Presidential election of 1898 [sic], 1896. My father lost a bet & he had to wheel his cousin Glen McLoud in the parade. In this election 16 to 1 was the slogan. Mother, 1973. This was taken at Martin. The 'middle' of town & the right the only dry goods store in the town. On the other corner, black smith shop, now the Martin Bank."
