Home Visitors of Mary, St. George Lithuanian Church
View of nuns from the Home Visitors of Mary praying at the St. George Lithuanian Church. Stamped on back: "Detroit Free Press, Jerry Heiman, Free Press photographer." Newspaper clipping on back: "Last to leave St. George's were the Home Visitors of Mary. By Hiley H. Ward, Detroit Free Press writer. A Catholic priest sadly bade farewell to his condemned church Sunday, then blasted the City's policy of sweeping away churches to make room for new freeways. The priest, the Rev. Father Edward J. Walsh, assailed the freeway policy in his final sermon at St. George Parish, 1319 Westminster. Stepping to the side of the alter [sic], Father Walsh charged: 'There is never any consideration given to the moral nature of this institution in this community. Today we have a crying need for better schools and conditions, and what do they do? They tear down the school and church.'" Handwritten on back: "Home Visitors of Mary, Detroit. Group of sisters founded at St. George's Church, linger in prayer after final mass Sunday."
