Walter Marmon and motorists in 1904 Marmon automobile
View of Walter Marmon and motorists in a 1904 Marmon car. Label on back: "Nordyke & Marmon Co., of Indianapolis, Ind., began the manufacture of motor cars in 1902. The first car ever made this company is stillin their possession and the accompanying photograh, taken recently, gives a splendid idea of how the then considered beautiful creation looks today. Nevertheless this car, pioneer that it was, possessed many original features which were destined to represent the accepted standards of the modern motor car. It was the first to have a slide door entrance to the tonneau; selective transmission, three speeds forward and one reverse; multiple disc clutch with cork insert, double brakes operating through equalizers; one of the first pressed steel frames; tilted steering wheel; hollow crank shaft, circulating lubricating system and other modern features. This car originally had a water cooled two cylinder motor but in 1905 was changed to a six cylinder air cooled, one of the first six cylinders motors installed in this country and it is still in good working order. In the picture, Walter Marmon, President of the Nordyke & Marmon Company, is at the steering wheel; at his left is H.H. Rice, Sales Mgr. In the center of the tonneau is C.C. Hanch, Treas.; on his right is H.G. Shafer, Factory Superintendant and at this left F.E. Moskovics, Commercial Manager."
