The island contains 702 acres and is entirely covered with one of the most beautiful parks in the United States, having some 21 miles of macadam roads, a magnificent casino, pavilions, boat house, aquarium, horticultural hall and zoological gardens. The island was purchased by Detroit in 1879. Since then $1,600,000 has been expended in beautifying it. C.T. Photochrom."
