Motorists towing a Chalmers automobile through snow, New Hampshire
View of men towing a Chalmers car on snow-covered forest road in New Hampshire. Label on back: "8. Between Bretton Woods, N.H. and Crawford Notch, N.H. At this point, the drift was so deep that the rear of the car rested on the ground, the wheels spinning in the air clear off the ground. The differential was locked by means of a rope tied to the left-hand rear and front wheels, which Lieutenant Hanna is holding. The rope on the right-hand side of the car was tied to the forward part of the right rear wheel; and, thence, to a tree. The clutch was then let in; and, as the wheel revolved one half a revolution, the car was pulled ahead a like distance. This operation was repeated several times until the car was clear of the drift." Handwritten on back: "Chalmers, ca. 1918."
