Typed on back: "This photograph shows a length of the no. 3 (or upstream) intake pipe which was installed in the Detroit River, running out from Water Works Park, during the summer of 1890 and removed in November 1934, under contract RC-27. The pipe is 6'-0" in diameter and each length is 26'-6" long, and is fabricated from 3/8 inch wrought iron plates. The length shown here is designated no. 1 and was the outermost length adjoining the tee and strainer boxes at the outer end of the intake. The pipe as shown is viewed from its outer or southerly end, and the cast iron bead for caulking, and also the bolt connections may be seen. This intake was laid between the months of April and September, 1890."
