1898 Baker electric runabout
Artist's depiction of a man posing in a 1898 Baker electric runabout. Stamped on back: "Baker Industrial Truck Division of the Baker-Raulang Company." Label on back: "The first Baker electric. Built in 1898 by Walter C. Baker, this electric runabout was the predecessor of the light-weight electric at the turn of the century, and is believed to be the first vehicle in which left hand drive was used. In reality, it was only a buggy with a power plant built in. Weighing 550 pounds, it carried a 10 cell battery and a 3/4 h.p. motor under the seat. Two speeds -- forward and reverse -- were provided, and a mileage of 20 m.p.h. was advertised. In 1900 this Baker was exhibited at the first Automobile Show in New York, where Walter Baker introduced the first rear axle bevel gear." Handwritten on back: "Baker."
