Printed on back: "In 1780, Colonel Francis Navarre journeyed from the tiny French village known as Detroit to start a settlement on the banks of the River Aux Raisins. The village was peopled by Pottawattomie Indians. That settlement grew up to be modern Monroe. The American flag was raised over the little town in 1796.
