Typewriting Department, the Business Institute
View rows of desks and typewriters in the classroom of the Typewriting Department at the Business Institute. Printed on front: "Main Typewriting Department, the Business Institute, Detroit, Michigan. Total Institute typewriting equipment includes over 300 machines." Printed on back: "To young ladies. There is nothing more interesting or more valuable for young women than the practical courses of study offered by the Business Institute. Those who acquire a thorough business training feel its safe-guarding influence and the spirit of independence which comes from the ability to earn one's livelihood. It is impossible to foresee conditions that may exist in the life any young woman. The only safe way is for her to be prepared to earn her living if it should become necessary. The Institute training for young ladies includes a brief six weeks' course, (calculating machine and comptometer,) a six month's course, (stenographic) and the complete secretarial training. A young lady will find in the associations at the Business Institute a carefully guarded atmosphere of refinement. She will have the friendship of capable, conscientious teachers, men and women of good influence and high ideals, and when she has completed her training she is sent out to office employment where the conditions and influences are favorable."
