Margaret Handke, Murray Corporation of America
Portrait of Margaret Handke at the Murray Corporation of America factory. Article on back: "96 schools, 48 states mark her experience. The war may mean new places and new sights to millions of Americans but to black-eyed Margaret June Handke it means the end to years of traveling that have taken her into every state in the nation as well as to Canada and Mexico. Since she was a baby, June has been traveling with her family, attending schools in every conceivable spot. She completed her formal education a little over a year ago in Florida, graduating from high school after attending 96 schools in 48 states, Mexico, New Brunswick and Vancouver. Despite the fact she changed schools nearly 100 times during 12 years, June never missed a grade. Her longest stay in any one school was six weeks, and she still can't figure out how her family remained that long in one spot. When June was a baby, her father was in the carnival and circus enterprises. After that he became a traveling salesman and June went along. The net result -- June has the travel bug pretty bad, but she is willing to settle down for a while on her job as an assembler on the B-17 F. After the war, June plans to set out again, this time to be a singer. She has done some professional singing, and had a radio program of her own in Canada several years ago. She knows the road ahead to becoming a singer is a tough one, but after a girl has faced hurricanes in Florida, earthquakes in California, 119-degree heat in Arizona and 60 below zero cold in Montana, the obstacles do not look too great."
