Worker sealing mold, Chevrolet foundry
Grab
Description
View of a man sealing a mold, in preparation for casting at the Chevrolet foundry. Label on front: "A decorative effect suggestive of greeting atop a birthday cake -- and applied in much the same fashion -- is achieved for reasons of stern practicality at a Chevrolet foundry producing magnesium castings for aircraft engines. To control flow of the light metal in the mold, this worker seals the interstices between cores, dispensing a paste mixture from a hand syringe, much as a baker writes his birthday greetings across the top of a cake." Stamped on back: "General Motors Photographic." Handwritten on back: "War workers--Unusual."
