Hattie McDaniel was the first Black person to receive an Academy Award -- in 1939 for "Best supporting actress' for her role in 'Gone with the wind.' Hattie McDaniel, seen here with Fay Bainter, died on October 26, 1952. Her other film appearances include 'Judge Priest' (1935), 'Nothing sacred' (1937), 'Song of the south' (1947), and 'Mr. Blandings builds his dream house.' She was also seen in the 1952 television series 'Beulah.'" Handwritten on back: "McDaniel, Hattie."
