View of aviator and unidentified man seated in airplane at Grosse Pointe aviation meet. Handwritten on back: "Aircraft competitions--Grosse Pointe aviation meet, 1911." Label on file: "Regarding the Grosse Pointe file. The aviation event took place at the then Grosse Pointe Golf Club, now the site of the Grosse Pointe High School. The occasion was the result of Russell A. Alger's effort to bring the Wright airplane to Detroit. Alger was a founder of the Detroit Aviation Society and an investor in the Wright Airplane Co. The planes [sic] pilot, Frank R. Coffyn, took 41 high status passengers aloft during the period, June 18-20, 1911. Later Alger bought the plane and had Coffyn teach him to fly it."
