Satchel Paige
Portrait of pitcher Satchel Paige wearing New York uniform. Printed on front: "The great Satchell [sic] Paige." Printed on back: "Satchel Paige, a legend in his own time whose name is synonymous with the Negro Baseball Leagues. After 21 years in the Negro Leagues, Paige became the oldest rookie to play major league baseball when he pitched for the Cleveland Indians in 1948 at the age of 42. In 1965 Paige became the oldest man to ever pitch (and probably play) in a major league game when he appeared in a relief role for the Kansas City Royals (giving up no runs in a 3-inning stint). Paige (1906-1982) in 1971 became the first player from the Negro Leagues to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame." Pomegranate Publications, Box 808022, Petaluma, CA 94975.
