Baseball players for 'Tim' Murnane benefit game
Group portrait of baseball team playing against the Red Sox at 'Tim' Murnane benefit game in 1917. Caption on clipping: "This is the best ball club of the 1917 season. Here we have the all-star combination that played the Red Sox in the 'Tim' Murnane benefit game. It would walk through either of the major leagues with about one more pitcher, but was beaten by the Boston club, 2 to 0, thanks to some great hurling. The outfield consisted of Cobb, Jackson and Speaker, the infield of McInnis, Chapman, Maranville and Weaver. Schang and O'Neill were the catchers, while Johnson, Shocker and Ehmke formed the mound staff. With Connie Mack to look after the strategical part of the management and Hughie Jennings to enthuse the players, it would be invincible. See if you can pick the stars out." Label on front: "Upper row, left to right: Jennings, Walter Johnson, Stuffy McInnis, Steve O'Neill, Buck Weaver, (standing, Connie Mack), Ray Chapman, Cobb, Joe Jackson. Lower row, Tris Speaker, Howard Ehmke, Rabbit Maranville, Wally Schang, Urban Shocker."
