Until Eddie took over as manager of the 6th place Phillies on July 26, 1948, he had never been in the majors as player or manager. Yet in 1949 he led his hustling team to third place, and in 1950 to the pennant. Playing career began in 1934 with Norfolk. As playing manager at Amsterdam, 1939, flashed a classy .369 batting average. Eddie was piloting Toronto Maple Leafs when called to Phils. No. 184 in the 1951 series baseball picture cards.
