Sam is one of the few players who never was in the minors. He came directly to the A's from college in 1938, and--with time out for Uncle Sam--has been with them ever since. His best season was 1941, when he hit .322 and drove in 106 runs. Sam got the All-America nod in football at U. of California. No. 9 in the 1951 series baseball picture cards.
