Carl Hubbell
Portrait of Carl Hubbell, pitcher for the New York Giants. Diamond Stars series. Printed on front: "Carl Hubbell." Printed on back: "Diamond Stars, no. 39. Good left-handed pitchers, like Carl Hubbell of the Giants, are becoming more and more scarce. It is said, in the major leagues, that of two pitchers of equal pitching calibre, a left and a right, the portsider has greater effect because his curves and line of pitching flight come from an awkward angle to the batter. Some major league batters learn to switch from one side of the plate to the other, to be on the opposite side from the pitcher's throwing arm and thus get advantage of the wider angle of the ball's approach. Austen Lake, Boston American. Carl O. Hubbell. Born Carthage, Mo., 32 years old; bats both ways, throws left; 6 ft. tall, 170 pounds. Won 21, lost 12 in 1934; won 2, lost none in 1933.
