Al Mattern and Johnny Kling
Portraits of Al Mattern, pitcher for the Boston Rustlers and Johnny Kling, catcher for the Boston Rustlers. Center image depicts Kling tagging Hans Lobert of the Cincinnati Reds. Hassan Triple Folders (T202) series. Printed on front: "A.A. Mattern, Rustlers; John G. Kling, Rustlers." Printed on back: "John Kling. 'Johnny' Kling, one of the greatest catchers that ever wore a mask, was got by the Cubs from St. Joseph in 1900. In 1903, when Chance went from behind the bat to first base, Kling began his wonderful record. Besides being a power behind the plate, his batting in the four championship years, 1906-7-8-10 averaged .285. In 1911 he went to Boston in trade. Lobert almost caught. Kling was a little slow in tagging Lobert; for the latter is one of the quickest base thieves in the business, and is not often caught, no matter how skilled the man covering a base. The incident shown in the picture on the other side occurred when Lobert, then third baseman of the Cincinnatis, had just made a safe hit and was leading off to second. Lobert is one of the speediest runners on the diamond, having run the bases in 13 4-5 seconds, and beaten out a bunt in 3 2-5. He has even made a 100-yard dash in 10 seconds flat. Kling is some player too, many say the best catcher in the Nationals. Factory no. 649, 1st dist. N.Y. A.A. Mattern. A.A. Mattern, the star southpaw of the Boston National League Club, commenced playing professional ball with Indianapolis in 1905. In 1906 he was with Montreal, and in 1907, pitching for the Holyokes of the Connecticut League, helped win the pennant by securing 16 victories out of 23 games. In the fall of 1907, he was bought by the Boston Nationals. Hassan cork tip cigarettes, the Oriental smoke."
