McLean, catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, besides being a good backstop is also one of the biggest men in baseball, being six feet five inches tall, and built in proportion. Since 1907 he has caught the majority of their games for the Reds, his pegging being especially good. In 1911 he batted .287 and fielded .968. Hal Chase too late. Even such a great baseman as Hal Chase may be outwitted mentally as well as physically at times, as is seen in the picture on the other side of this card. Therein is depicted McConnell, the little second baseman of the Chicago Americans, sliding under the all but invincible Chase and making the bag his own. A second sooner with the ball, and Chase would have had him. McConnell came naturally by his baseball aptitude, and in his boyhood was one of the baseball wonders of the vicinity of Williamstown, Mass. where he was born. Boston got him from Providence in the fall of 1907. Factory no. 649, 1st dist. N.Y. George Suggs. George Suggs, one of the Cincinnatis' most dependable pitchers, first pitched for independent teams in his native state. In 1904 he worked for the Jacksonvilles and in 1905-6-7 for the Memphis team. In the fall of 1907 his services secured by the Detroits, who let him go to Mobile during the season of 1909. His purchase by Cincinnati proved a good investment.
