Chief Meyers and Christy Mathewson
Portraits of Christy Mathewson and Chief Meyers of the New York Giants; in center of card is a view of Giants third baseman Art Devlin tagging a player. Hassan Triple Folders (T202) series. Printed on back: "C. Mathewson. Christopher Mathewson, idol of New York fans, has been one great factor in helping the Giants to their good standing. Absolutely subduing the Athletics in 1905 and mowing down the Yankees in 1910 (14 in one game) were only samples of his work. His splendid control is shown by the fact that in five years ending 1911 he only gave 242 bases on balls. Devlin gets his man. 'A great third baseman' is the title that ... gave to Devlin, as the result of his work with [the] Giants. He has certainly earned the title; for, says an authority, 'always striving to win, never giving up in the face of defeat, ever a clean player, he is a credit to our national sport.' Indeed, he is one of the closest students of the game, particularly of third base play, and has written much about what a third baseman has to and should do. Says he, 'The third baseman must have nerve as well as powerful hands and a strong throwing arm. The study of batsmen is an important factor. Try and discover what kind of ball the pitcher intends to deliver. Always keep an eye on the catcher.' John T. Meyers. 'Chief' Meyers, the Giants hard-hitting catcher, has steadily improved in his backstop work, and at bat his big war club has smashed in many a run. His fine showing in 1911 earned him catcher's place on the Spalding Record All-American nine. He caught in 128 games for the season, fielding .981 and batting .332. Incidentally he stole 7 bases.
