Eddie Collins and Danny Murphy
Portraits of Eddie Collins, second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics and Danny Murphy, outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics. Center image depicts Collins being tagged by Nap Lajoie of the Cleveland Naps. Hassan Triple Folders (T202) series. Printed on front: "Collins, Phila. Amer.; Murphy, Phila. Amer." Printed on back: "Daniel Murphy. Daniel Murphy, outfielder of the Philadelphia Athletics, has been playing ball along time. He commenced as a professional when only 18, and is still going strong. In four years ending 1911 he made 111 two-baggers, 50 three-baggers and 22 home runs. He made more assists than any outfielder in either league in 1911, and batted .329. Collins easily safe. It's just a little apparently innocent byplay going on at first, shown in the picture; for Eddie Collins had only made a bluff at leading off too far, and Lajoie couldn't touch him out. No young player ever made a greater impression among the fans than Collins. He was born at Millerton, N.Y., in 1887, the son of a well known railroad man. He was graduated from Columbia University in 1907, where he was on the college ball team for three years, and also with the football eleven for a season. He made his first hit with the Athletics as an emergency batter. The brilliant work that put him among the leaders was not done till 1909. Factory no. 640, 1st dist. N.Y. Edw. T. Collins. 'Eddie' Collins, second baseman of the Athletics, played well at short on the Columbia University team, but in his first year with the Athletics did nothing remarkable. Next tried at second he proved himself a star at that position. Two years out of the last three he has headed all second basemen, besides being a fine batsman and base runner.
