Marv Owen
Portrait of Marv Owen, third baseman for the Detroit Tigers. Diamond Stars series. Printed on front: "Marvin Owen." Printed on back: "Diamond Stars, no. 67. Marvin Owen, Detroit's third baseman, is a good example of quick, cat-like action in a position where batted balls often travel like a white streak with little time to play the bounces cleanly. Third base, called the 'red light' spot, by reason of the danger of line drives and whistling grounders, is one where fast footwork and lightning movement is essential. Hits that are blocked with the glove or body can usually be recovered in time to make the putout at first. Due to bunts and the fact that a third baseman often has to 'blindly' play on a base runner who approaches from his back, makes it the hardest job in the infield to play with finesse.
