Sam Rice
Portrait of Sam Rice, right fielder for the Cleveland Indians. Diamond Stars series. Printed on front: "Sam Rice." Printed on back: "Diamond Stars, no. 32. Throwing - The veteran Sam Rice of the Cleveland Indians has always been one of the fastest and most accurate throwers from the outfield in the game. The outfield throw to the bases and home plate should come on the bounce, a single hop that strikes the ground about 20 feet in front of the base. Reason for the bouncing throw is that it saves a tendency, at long range, to throw over the baseman's head. By keeping the ball low in front of the receiver he is always sure to get his glove on it. On ground hits to the outfield with men on bases, the fielder must come in fast to meet the ball and save valuable split-seconds which mean quicker throwins and more putouts. Austen Lake. Edgar C. Rice. Born Morocco, Ind. 43 years old. Bats left, throws right. 5 ft. 9 1/2 inches, 155 pounds. Hit for .293 in 1934. One of 240 major league players with playing tips.
