Bill DeLancey
Portrait of Bill DeLancey, catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Diamond Stars series. Printed on front: "Bill DeLancey." Printed on back: "Diamond Stars, no. 81. Bill Delancey, young catcher of the world champion Cardinals, has the knack of curling his fingers when about to catch the ball. By keeping his bare hand curled in a sort of fist until after the ball has struck his glove, Delancey saves himself many a split finger from foul tips that would splinter fingers that are extended stiffly. Major league catchers in recent years receive comparatively few broken fingers by this little trick, whereas catchers of the older day had their hands twisted out of shape by repeated breaks. Austen Lake, Boston American. William P. Delancey. Born Greensboro, N.C., 23 years old; bats left, throws right; 5 ft. 11 1/2 inches, 185 pounds. Hit for 279 in 1935.
