This trade gave him a chance to get into the game. In 1908 he caught only 15 full games for Detroit. In 1909 he finished 27 games for the White Sox, in which he made only two errors on 150 chances, and in 1910 ranked third among American League packstops. In 1911, he fielded .963. Close at the plate. One can easily imagine with what huge joy Sweeney put out Walsh just as the latter thought he was going to score; for many is the time that the wonderful Chicago pitcher has struck out the Highlanders' catcher. These two players are right up in the top line of the big leaguers. Ever since Comiskey picked up Walsh from the Newarks, he was then a raw, lusty youngster not long from the Pennsylvania mountains, he has been pitching himself into greater and greater fame. Maybe it's becasuse he is such a big fellow; he stands over 6 feet and weighs 215. Sweeney came from Chicago, where he was born in 1888, and caught for St. Ignatius College when only 15 years old. Factory no. 649, 1st dist. N.Y. Edward Walsh. 'Ed' Walsh, star twirler of the Chicago Americans, is one of the very best spit-ball pitchers in the busness. In 1906, when the White Sox won the pennant and the World's Championship, he was largely instrumental in their success. He is a great worker, and appeared in 45 games in 1911, winning 27.
