Babe Phelps
Full-length action portrait of Babe Phelps, catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, swinging bat in stadium. Play Ball series. Printed on front, in banner set with glove, bat, ball, and catcher's mask: "'Babe' Phelps." Handwritten on front: "Lolla. C. III. C." Printed on back: "[66. Ernest Gordon Phelps.] Catcher. Brooklyn Dodgers. Born: Odenton, Md., April 19, 1908. Bats: Left. Throws: Right. Height: 6'. Weight: 210 lbs. The nickname 'Babe' was tagged onto Gordon Phelps because of his power with a bat. Numerous injuries last year, kept 'Babe' out of action quite a bit last year, but he managed to catch 98 games for the Dodgers, and his .285 batting average, although below his par, was good enough to bring across 42 runs. Babe was a bargain for the Dodgers, who picked him up from the Chicago Cubs in 1934 for the waiver price of $7500. He has since been a chief cog in the Brooklyn machine and it wasn't until last year that he failed to hit .300 or better for them. The Babe was voted to the National League All-Star team last year and in his only appearance, walked as a pinch-hitter. Play Ball. A pictorial news record of America's favorite sport.
