Red Rolfe
Portrait of Red Rolfe, third baseman for the New York Yankees. Diamond Stars series. Printed on front: "Robert Rolfe." Handwritten on front: "II. 3B. 1B. IB. A.I. 7 [in circle]." [additional writing not legible]. Printed on back: "Diamond Stars, no. 29. Fielding - Knowing how to play position for batters is a fine science in the major leagues. As a general rule, outside pitches will be hit to the side of the diamond or outfield opposite the side of the plate the batters stand on. The reverse is true of inside pitches, which usually will be pulled toward the near field. Major league fielders watch closely to see the spot where a pitch is about to cross the plate and get a leaning start to that side, often making finger tip fielding stops that would otherwise have been missed. Red Rolfe, of the Yankees, has the knack of sensing the probable direction of a hit before it leaves the bat. Austen Lake. Robert A. Rolfe. Born Pennock, N.H. Age. 27, height 6 ft., weight 170. Bats left, throws right. Hit for .287 in 1934. One of 240 major league players with playing tips. [Copyright] 1935, National Chicle Co., Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A."
