Charlie Dooin, the star catcher of the Phillies, was bought from St. Joseph in 1903, and has since been a favorite of Quaker fans. In 1911 the Phillies under his clever handling headed the National League for a brief period, but when he broke his leg they slowed up. Donlin out at first. Mike Donlin, as seen in the picture, thought he had made a safe hit; but he failed to do so, as the first baseman had touched the base and was returning the ball to the pitcher even before the runner reached the bag. Donlin will always be remembered as one of the greatest hitters and throwers in baseball. He has played all over the country, from California to the Atlantic. He joined the St. Louis team about 1900 when Cy Young and Jack Powell were the great pitchers and Lou Criger and Schreckengost were getting their preliminary laurels as backstops. He played nearly all positions, and went to Baltimore, whence he followed McGraw to York. Factory no. 649, 1st dist., N.Y. S.R. Magee. Sherwood R. Magee, outfielder of the Philadelphia Nationals, was one of the great players of the decade just past, and will be of this one, from the way stays in the game. In 1910 he led the batsmen of the National League with .331, which figure represented 172 hits for a total 263 bases. In 1911 he batted .288 and fielded .981.
