Roger Bresnahan and John J. McGraw
Portraits of Roger Bresnahan of the St. Louis Cardinals and John J. McGraw, manager of the New York Giants; in center of card is a view of McGraw and Harry H. Davis of the Philadelphia Athletics shaking hands before the 1911 World Series. Hassan Triple Folders (T202) series. Printed on back: "John J. McGraw. When John J. McGraw took hold of the Giants July 19, 1902, they stood .315. Next year they finished second. In 1904 they won the National pennant, and in 1905 both championships. Since then they have stood second in 1906, 1908 and 1910, third in 1909, fourth in 1907 and first in 1911. McGraw incidentally developed young players who will keep up the team's standing. Just before the battle. Here we have two of the cleverest leaders in the national game: McGraw, manager of the Giants, and Davis, captain of the Athletics, the two great teams of 1911. The picture shows them shaking hands just before the World Series began. It is an interesting coincidence that these men were born in the same year, 1873. McGraw chose baseball as his vocation, he says, because when a boy every time he batted he sent the sphere through a window, which cost him a licking. He had to practise till he didn't break windows. Davis got his start because he did so well at Girard College that the Providence team took him on. Roger Bresnahan. Roger Bresnahan, the aggressive manager and catcher for the St. Louis Nationals, came to them from the Giants, with a fine reputation as a player. He regular place was behind the bat, but with the New York he had helped fill both infield and outfield, also fattening the score with his heavy hitting. In six years ending 1908 his aggregate batting average was .292. Hassan cork tip cigarettes, the Oriental smoke. Factory no. 649, 1st dist. N.Y."
