Description
Detail of loggia panel from outside the windows of the Fine Arts Room at the Detroit Public Library. The loggia, designed by Frederick J. Wiley and executed by Mary Chase Stratton and Horace Caulkins of Pewabic Pottery, is made of "gres flambe" which means that the tesserae are of enameled baked clay and not of glass. The scene entitled, "Seven Ages of Man", represents a scene from Shakespeare's, "As you like it," within each arch a panel depicts each age, infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, old man and second childhood. Recorded in lantern slide ledger: "D/Public Library-Loggia, Detroit of one panel, c.1."
