Typed on label on photograph back: "Site of the old and the new city hall, presented to G.B. Catlin, by L.W. Partridge, of Denver, Col. This photo enlargement shows the site of the present city hall as it was in 1865. In the center foreground the low building is the remains of a portion of the old Michigan Central passenger station, built in 1837. The eastern portion of it was burned June 15th, 1859, and afterward some smaller building were built to replace the burned portion. In the central background is the dome of the old National Hotel which had been remodelled into the Russell House. At the right, the Detroit Female Seminary, built in 1835. Later it became the state armory and still later a city office building, when the old city hall became too crowded. At the left, the old city hall, built in 1831 and abandoned in 1871. The pillars on the front are spirally wound with black and white bunting to signify the city's mourning for the death of President Abraham Lincoln. The photo (original) was taken in April 1865. / This enlargement was presented by Levi W. Partridge of Denver, Colorado. The firm of Gamble & Partridge, 40 years ago, had a carpet, curtain & draperies store at 221-223 Woodward Avenue. Mr. Patridge's address in 1932 is at 325 Continental Oil Building, Denver, Colorado. This picture was presented in token of his continued interest in Detroit and its history, and to represent to this and future generations the civic center, as it was at the close of the civil war period." Letter from donor also glued to photograph back. Handwritten on photograph back: "Photographed by A.W. Abraham a few days after Abe Lincoln assassination, April 14, 1865. 25 years."
