Members of a jury
Group portrait of men wearing suits; a picture of another man has been added to photograph. Handwritten on front: "G. Grelling, phot." Label on back: "Data taken from accession record: Framed photograph of a jury panel (?) and U.S. Judge, U.S. District Attorney, and U.S. Marshal with whom they served, approx. 1875-1876. #3 left to right, front row; Aaron Burr Maynard, U.S. District attorney, 1876; #4 left to right front row: U.S. District Judge John W. Longyear (who died in office a few years later.) Note: Donor's (Mr. William Maynard Swan), father, Henry Harrison Swan (U.S. District Judge 1891-1911) had been with Mr. Maynard as Ass't. U.S. District Attn'y for about four years, and left that position at the same time that Mr. Maynard retired from office, in 1876 to form, with him, the law firm of Maynard and Swan. Donor's father is not one of the others in this group. Donor's note: In those days it was quite the vogue for a jury panel at the end of their term of service, to want to be photographed with the U.S. Judge, the U.S. District Atty. and the U.S. Marshall, the officials of whom they had seen the most while serving. Possible the latter is one of those whom I cannot identify."
