Jefferson School students
Group of students pose with their teachers outside brick school building; written on building in chalk: "June 1899." Embossed on front: "C.M. Hayes & Co., Detroit." Label on back: "Sidney L. Alexander is second from the right in the second seated row. He was the only son, and the oldest of five children of Max A. and Estelle Alexander who, as I am informed lived variously on Commonwealth Avenue and Bagg Avenue (now Temple) in Detroit around the turn of the century. The Masonic Temple now stands on the site of one of those residences. My father remained a resident of Detroit all his life (after 1899. Prior to then the family resided in Chicago and elsewhere). He attended Central High School, the Detroit College of Law, and practiced law in Detroit. Although widely known in legal and government circles he held only one public office, as a member of the Port of Detroit Commission under Governor Sigler. He died and is buried here at Beth El Memorial Park. Source: Gabriel N. Alexander, son." Handwritten label on back: "Jefferson School, Detroit, second from right in second seated row, Sidney L. Alexander, 1886-1953." Lower left corner of mat is torn and repaired with tape.
