Beaux Arts entrance gate to Waterworks Park, built 1893, designed by Gustav Adolphus Mueller and Herman Brede. Three-tiered triumphal arch with dome and staircases. Viewed from street. Two women in ground-level gate; several people on staircases and next to dome. Located at East Jefferson at Cadillac Boulevard. Hurlbut was a grocer and Detroit Water Commissioner; left most of his estate to the Board of Water Commissioners. Born 1803; died Sept 7 1885. Typed on photograph back: "Photos from H. Erichsen, 340 Chandler Ave., Detroit Mich." (address hand-corrected to "415 Harmon, Birmingham, Mich." Handwritten on photograph back: "Hurlbut Memorial Gate, Waterworks Park, Detroit, Mich. Designed by Gustav Mueller, architect." Spot on photograph.
