Handwritten on back, but crossed off: "taken April 23, 1897. Building about to be torn down." Label on back: "Finney Hotel, built in 1854, at the southeast corner of Woodward and Gratiot Avenues." Label on back: "Finney Hotel. The Finney House was built in 1854 by Seymour Finney, who kept the house until 1857. In 1858 Parshall & Antisdel were proprietors. From 1859 to 1870 J. Parshall was sole manager; in 1870 C. P. Lord; from 1872 to 1876, A. H. Emery; from 1876 to 1883, N. H. Williams. In 1883 A. H. Emery again became manager. Farmer, Hist. of Detroit, p. 487."
