Clapboard house on corner behind picket fence, viewed at an angle from intersection. Leafless trees, fire hydrant, lamppost, and other houses visible. Typed on label on mat back: "House occupied by U.S. Grant at northeast corner of Jefferson [hand-corrected to Fort] and Russell. Picture taken 1873." Handwritten on mat back: "House once occupied by Genl. Grant, n.e. cor. Jefferson Ave. [corrected to Fort St.] & Russell Sts. Taken 1873. Now the site of the University Club. C.M. Burton & Co. Property of Silas Farmer, Detroit, Mich." Arrows drawn on mat and photograph front. Some lines in photograph enhanced with ink. Mat dirty on sides, one corner torn.
