Close-up of building on corner of Jefferson and Griswold. Sign above doorway reads "First National Bank." Sign on top of building reads "Michigan Mutual Life Insurance." Sign on lower floor reads "A. Enggass Wholesale Jewelry." Handwritten on back: "SW Cor., Jefferson Ave. & Griswold 1881. Built 1836 by the Bank of Michigan. 'It is built of shell limestone, and the stories show many beautiful petrifactions; in older times the building was oiled yearly, and they were very noticable. When the Bank of Michigan failed, the building on Dec. 12, 1842 was sold at auction to the United States, for $32,000, and was used as a court-house and post-office.' Farmer's Detroit, V.1, p.859."
