Handwritten on mat front: "X- carriage" (mark for printing with image of carriage?). Printed on label on mat back: "Brodie homestead, courtesy Burton Historical Collection. Two small rooms on the third floor of the Hammond Building were used by the Detroit Board of Commerce during the close of its organization period. On October 31st it moved to the State Savings Bank Building. Unable to renew its lease there, the homestead of Dr. William Brodie, northwest corner of Wayne and Lafayette, and an adjoining lot were purchased for a permanent home. After remodeling, the Board occupied it in December of 1906. It was then decided to tear down the old structure and erect a three-story building for the Board. The completed building was dedicated October 7, 1913. During the construction work the Board occupied offices at the Fellowcraft Club in the Palmer Building. When E.D. Stair bought the structure in 1926 he added three stories and extended the building to the west. During this time the Board was quartered in the Free Press Building." Handwritten on mat back: "64 W. Lafayette St. N.w. corner Wayne. 1881."
