Detroit's first and only whipping post was erected in Woodward Avenue near this location in 1818 to rid the town of petty thieves and vagabonds. The last two culprits to be punished were flogged by the sheriff in 1830, and shortly afterward the whipping post was removed, the law legalizing its use was repealed on March 4, 1831.
