Inscription reads: "In honor of Clarence Monroe Burton, a citizen of Detroit, his genius and interest lay in the collection of the original source of the history of this city and state and of the Northwest Territory. Having devoted a lifetime of effort to this work he presented the results of his interest and industry to his fellow citizens."
