Hotel Erichsen
Reproduction of lithograph depicting the Hotel Erichsen. Streetcar, horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians in foreground. Printed on front: "Hotel Erichsen, 148 & 150 Randolph Str., Detroit, Mich. The Calvert Litho. Co., Detroit, Mich." Handwritten on front: "N 1-22-28." Accompanying article reads: "What a gay town was Detroit 60 years ago! (From one of the lithographs made in Detroit.) Indeed, yes -- the class of those days went a-horse-back or in a carriage and pair. Common folk rode in the horse car or on a bus, hired a hack, or walked. Sure, we had a hotel with a flag! It's the corner of Fort and Randolph, across from the present Wayne County building in 1868. The original, an old lithograph, was recently found by Mr. E.H. Kiefer. It is considered one of the best depictions extant of life here in the sixties. The dress of the day, including white-wing skirts, bustles and riding, is well pictured. An Indian has fish, his squaw, moccasins, for sale. An ex-slave solicits jobs as white-washer, the favorite trade of Negroes in northern cities at that time. In front of Eccard's tobacco store is a wooden Indian carved by Julius Melchers, father of Gari Melchers, now a famous artist."
